While museums may close one day a week and theaters might go dark, there is always live music in the city, 365 days a year.

Acts that can draw a stadium-sized crowd go to Madison Square Garden, the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, or Radio City Music Hall. But you can see everyone for chart-toppers to undiscovered folk singers at the city's smaller venues.

Check The Village Voice and Time Out New York for comprehensive listings of upcoming shows.

Some favorites:

The Beacon Theatre on the Upper West Side has big-name stars like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty, but also hosts an eclectic array of new acts, like the Alabama Shakes, Sufjan Stevens, and the Decemberists.

The Bowery Ballroom actually runs a number of music venues around town, including Terminal 5, Mercury Lounge, and the Music Hall of Williamsburg. At any given moment there will be bands you've never heard of, bands that were big ten years ago, and bands at the peak of their success playing on these stages.

Le Poisson Rouge redefines eclectic with spoken word, nineties tribute bands, contemporary classical music, and much more.
