The Merchant's House Museum

This 1830s home was lived in by one family for a century and is wonderfully preservered.

Historic Richmond Town

Though it's a schlep to go out to Staten Island, you are rewarded with the best collection of colonial buildings in New York.

The Cloisters

This Medieval annex of the Met in Upper Manhattan is full of interesting objects. A ticket to main museum also gives you admission here for one week. (Note, however, that if you go to the Cloisters first, you ticket is only good for same day admission to the main museum.)

Hamilton Grange National Memorial

New York's founding father, Alexander Hamilton, built his home in Harlem just two years before his untimely death.

The City Reliquary

Ephemera from old New York City buildings along with temporary exhibitions fill this tiny space. You feel like you've stumbled into someone's attic.

Poe Cottage

Edgar Allan Poe's Bronx home is the only one of his NYC houses to survive. See the spot where his young wife died and where worked on his late works.

Weeksville Heritage Center

Weeksville was an African-American village in the 19th century that was accidentally rediscovered in the 1960s. Tour three historic homes and learn the history of black Brooklyn.
