There are many places New Yorkers just don't go -- to the top of Statue of Liberty, for example, or the Empire State Building. But if you're a visitor, don't let your local friends dissuade you from these and other worthwhile destinations, even if they seem like tourist traps.

(Many top attractions participate in Discount Pass schemes. Be sure to think about how many sights are going to see before investing in one of these.)

Below is some advice on the city's top attractions:

The Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island

Tip #1: If you want to go to the crown, reserve MONTHS in advance. Only a select few are allowed up each day and you must already have your ticket.

Tip #2: Even if you're not going to the crown, try to be on the first boat of the morning. The longer you delay arriving in Battery Park to get on the ferry, the longer the whole process will take. In the afternoons, people sometimes wait hours just to board the boat.

Tip #3: Don't skip Ellis Island. In fact, if you are pressed for time, don't get off the boat at the Statue of Liberty -- you'll get great pictures from the water -- and spend your time at Ellis Island instead.

The Empire State Building

Tip #1: Buy tickets in advance; they are good for a year.

Tip #2: It's pricey, but VIP tickets allow you to get to the front of most lines, and may be worth it if you are short on time.

Tip #3: Only completists need to pay the extra fee to go to the 102nd floor.

The World Trade Center

Tip #1: The memorial is now free; only the museum and observatory charge admission.

Tip #2: The museum is gut-wrenching for anyone who lived through the events of 9/11. Caveat emptor.

Tip #3: The observatory has great views...but you might prefer the Empire State Building or Rockefeller Center's "Top of the Rock" (below)

Rockefeller Center

Tip #1: Top of the Rock, while not as high up as the Empire State Building, has better views--including views of the Empire State Building.

Tip #2: There can be a long wait for skating...or none at all. If it's on your list, just play it by ear.

Tip #3: Don't forget the concourse of shops and food establishments underground in 30 Rockefeller Plaza.
